One of the most exciting parts of this project happened before any stitching even began!

Instead of guessing how the quilt might look, I used embroidery software to visually audition layout options using both the Quilting Backdrops™ blocks and the Ride Em Cowboy applique designs.

Use AI to Explore Color Possibilities

Color can completely change the personality of a quilt — and that’s where modern tools can become surprisingly helpful.

One really fun way to experiment before you ever cut fabric is by using AI image tools to audition color palettes and fabric combinations. You can upload a photo or screenshot of your quilt layout and ask AI to generate alternate colorways for your blocks, borders, backing, or binding. This can be especially helpful when you’re deciding between bold western colors, soft nursery tones, seasonal palettes, or even completely different themes using the same quilt layout.

For example, you could try prompts like:

  • “Create alternate color palettes for this western baby quilt using soft pastel nursery colors.”
  • “Show this cowboy quilt with rustic farmhouse fabrics and warm brown binding.”

AI images may not perfectly match exact fabrics or stitching textures, but they’re incredibly helpful for quickly exploring ideas and narrowing down your favorite directions.

There’s no single “right” way to use Quilting Backdrops™ alongside various embroidery designs, color palettes, and layout choices, and that creative flexibility is what makes projects like this so rewarding. 

Your embroidery machine becomes a creative tool for building something meaningful, personal, and completely unique to you.

Basic Quilt Construction Overview

After experimenting with layouts and colors, assembling the quilt came together surprisingly quickly. 

This quilt was assembled using alternating embroidered blocks:

  • 8x8 Quilting Backdrops™ blocks
  • 8x8 Ride Em Cowboy applique blocks

The blocks were arranged in a checkerboard-style layout to create movement and balance throughout the quilt.

After stitching all of the blocks:

  1. Square each block
  2. Arrange the layout
  3. Sew blocks together to create rows
  4. Sew rows together
  5. Cut backing to appropriate size
  6. Stitch "in the ditch" to attach top (combined blocks) to backing
  7. Bind the quilt
