Stitching a Floral Bookmark Using Organza and Clear Vinyl

These individual bookmarks are traditionally made with fabric, but there are a variety of other fun and unique materials that can be utilized to really complement the beautiful stitching and detail work. While the steps below demonstrate how to create these darling bookmarks using organza and clear vinyl, the general steps remain the same for most fabrics and materials. Have fun customizing these bookmarks to your unique style and personality.

Step 1: Select the floral bookmark you would like to stitch (there are four included with your purchase) and load it onto your machine. I am stitching the 6” size in my 5x7 hoop.

Choose design and size

Step 2: Hoop two layers of water-soluble stabilizer (fabric type).

Pro Tip: Two pieces of stabilizer will help to ensure your project does not tear through during stitching.

Step 3: Run the placement line for your fabric.

Step 4: Place the clear vinyl and one piece of organza directly on top of the stabilizer. Reference the cut chart found in the PDF directions (included with your purchase) for fabric size requirements.

Note: Clear vinyl on its own cannot withstand most satin and decorative stitches. It is highly recommended that you place a piece of organza (or similar fabric) on top of the clear vinyl to provide some added structure and support.

Step 5: Run the tack-down stitch to secure the vinyl and organza.

Step 8: Remove the hoop from your machine and flip it over to the back side. Trim the thread jumps and tails for a more polished look.

Step 9: Return the hoop to your machine and run the tack-down to secure the backing fabric in place.

Carefully trim away the excess organza and vinyl on both the front and back of the hoop.

Step 10: Run the decorative satin stitch around the entire bookmark.

Step 11: Run the final eyelet stitch to complete your bookmark.

Step 12: Using a pair of scissors, trim away the excess stabilizer.

Step 13: Remove all remaining stabilizer using warm water and gentle rubbing. Set aside the bookmark to dry.

Note: If your fabric is not sheer, you do not need to fully submerge the bookmark under water; instead only remove the stabilizer from the outer edges.

Beautiful floral stitching!

In addition to organza and clear vinyl, I also tested embroidery vinyl/faux leather and burlap. These styles turned out equally cute and were just as quick and easy to stitch. Have fun experimenting with a multitude of fun fabrics for these adorable floral bookmarks.
