Learn how to make a unique New Years party favor with your embroidery machine with this guide from Designs by JuJu.

Here is what you need for this project:

  • Assorted colors of felt sheets (9 x 12)
  • Assorted colors of glitter felt or glitter foam sheets
  • Assorted narrow ribbon
  • Sticky Paper Tear Away Stabilizer
  • Hot glue or craft glue
  • Silicone drink pouches (there are several options on Amazon or local party store)
  • Mirror ball curly straws (optional). (Note: plastic one-time-use straws come with the pouches – I opted to use the mirror ball straws because they are so cute!)

There are several good digital design file options on the DBJJ site – here are the links I used:

These silicone drink pouches are a great DIY party favor for New Year’s Eve this year. They can be pre-filled with adult cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages, or punch – even frozen drinks or smoothies!

If your party has a theme – make all the pouches to coordinate or be creative and make them all different (the more sparkly the better)! After the party, your guests can take the pouch and straw home and reuse it. Also, the banner can be repurposed as a mug rug. The mug rug is a terrific way to kick off 2024 and keep New Year’s resolutions reminders easily viewable.

Here is what you do:

Load the design you choose on your embroidery machine. I used a 5 x 7 hoop size, but this could be for 4 x 4. Double-check the pouch dimensions, it’s best for the pouches to be 4-5 inches wide.

Hoop sticky paper tear-away stabilizer. Note: I tested tear-away stabilizer and temporary adhesive spray and found the felt puckered. Sticky paper worked much better for me.

Cut the felt sheet in half and place it on top of the tear away in the hoop (in the pic I used white felt):

Stitch the design (be creative with thread color, metallic thread, etc.)  You will not see the back, so there is no need to worry about matching the bobbin thread.

Remove the hoop and remove the sticky paper tear-away stabilizer.

Cut the felt utilizing the banner template (feel free to adjust as you prefer and to fit your drink pouch. They can be bigger or smaller)

Cut glitter felt or foam sheet approximately ¼ inch larger on all sides then felt with stitched design. One sheet can make 2-3 pouch banners.

Line up the stitched design on top of glitter felt/foam and punch holes to line up with side holes on the silicone pouch (see picture) using sharp pointed scissors.

Place a dot of hot glue in all corners on the bottom of the top banner and press the bottom felt/foam to hold them together.

Cut two pieces of coordinating thin ribbon and tie the banner to the pouch.

Add a straw, your favorite beverage and you are ready to go!

Cheers and Happy New Year!
