Stitch-by-Stitch Instructions

STEP 1:  Hoop a piece of stabilizer.

STEP 2: Stitch the placement line for the batting.

STEP 3: Cover placement line with batting, making sure all sides are completely covered.

Stitch tack-down line.

Trim the batting as shown.

STEP 4: Next, stitch the placement line for the middle background fabric.

STEP 5: Cover the placement stitch with the center background fabric, making sure all sides are covered.

Stitch tack-down line.

Trim fabric as shown.

STEP 6: Next, stitch the motif design on the main background fabric.

STEP 7: Now the top and bottom borders will be added. The first is the bottom border.

Stitch the placement line for the border fabric.

STEP 8: Position the fabric strip with right side facing down and parallel to the placement stitch. Extend the fabric strip approximately 1/8–1/4 inch over the placement line.

Run tack-down stitches to secure the fabric as shown.

STEP 9: Remove hoop from machine and fold over the fabric, pressing the seam well with your fingers.

Tape down to secure in place.

Run tack-down stitches to secure the border with right side facing up.

STEP 10: We will now add the top border fabric.

Stitch placement line.

STEP 11: Repeat the same process to add the top border, following steps 7–9.

STEP 12: Stitch the decorative motif for the top and bottom border pieces.

STEP 13: Now complete the applique for this pot holder.

(For additional assistance with applique, please see the applique tutorial included with download: DBJJAppliqueTutorial.pdf)

STEP 14: The next few stitching steps are the decorative and satin stitches for the center of the pot holder.

STEP 15: Next, stitch the placement line for the ribbon.

STEP 16: Tape the ribbon to the pot holder as shown.

STEP 17: Stitch the small tack-down for the ribbon.

STEP 18: Next, remove hoop from machine and turn it over.

On the back side, lay Insul-Bright over the entire potholder and tape down.

Return hoop (right side up) to machine and run tack-down stitch, securing Insul-Bright to hooped potholder.

STEP 19: Remove hoop from machine and turn over.

Trim Insul-Bright close to the stitching.

Return the hoop to the machine, right side up.

STEP 20: The final step is to add the back.

Position the folded piece of fabric so the fold is toward the center.

Place the other backing piece on top of folded fabric, wrong side up.

Both pieces should now be covering the entire pot holder.

STEP 21: The final stitch in the design will outline the entire pot holder.

Be sure to slow down your machine for this step!

STEP 22: Cut away stabilizer, trimming close to the Insul-Bright.

Trim 1/4 inch around the entire pot holder.

STEP 23: Turn your pot holder right side out. If you prefer, the overlap can be secured with something like Stitch Witchery.

Your pot holder is complete!
